Fringe Files 26 June

Time flies...

It certainly has this year! Already we have passed the shortest day of the year with a few hardy souls taking a dip in the Wellington harbour, celebrations of Matariki abound (the festival continues at Te Papa this week), and we batten down the hatches for more wintery polar blasts (hands up who doesn't have a cold? Apparently, more than 60% of Wellingtonians will get one this winter).

Kakano 09

Thanks to the folks at Creative New Zealand, we are again able to offer Kakano grants for participants of the New Zealand Fringe Festival in 2009.

The Kakano fund (meaning 'seed' in Maori) has been established in conjunction with Creative New Zealand to provide a foundation for the development of NEW WORK by New Zealand artists participating in Fringe 09.

For Fringe 08, we distributed $50,544.63 in grants to 39 out of 51 applications.

Kakano applications will open in August and close 17 October 2008, with successful applicants notified early November. Fact sheets will be available in the next few weeks.

Legacy Fundraiser

Hip Hop Xposure, a special fundraising hip-hop dance and music concert will be held at the opulent Wellington Opera House this Saturday June 28.

The Legacy Dance crew leads a strong line-up that features local hip-hop artists Flowz and Beatrootz, Wellington dance crews Emerge and Infinite, and Auckland's Kaladyscope and TMC.

The aim is to raise $40,000 to send the nine young Legacy dancers to Las Vegas for the 2008 World Hip Hop Dance Championship, to be held July 28-30 in Las Vegas where they will battle crews from 30 nations for international respect and bragging rights.

“By no means will this be a cheap trip,” said Legacy Dance manager Liston Peilua. “We have a goal of raising $40,000 for the crew to attend but you couldn’t put a price tag on the experience these guys will have.

7pm, June 28 @ Wellington Opera House

$20 full, $15 children, $15 conc.

Trade Secrets

Passionate about up-skilling, energizing and democratizing the art scene of Wellington, “Trade Secrets” will provide ongoing support to artists, which will feed into the publics’ engagement and experience of the art.

“TRADE SECRETS” is the combined powers of Sian Torrington; artist, writer, former gallery manager, and Mary Laine; artist, writer, art educator. Together they provide years of international experience, research and connections. They also share the unique knowledge of what it is to work both AS an artist, as well as WITH other artists.

The premier launch of the first ever whizz bang Trade Secrets workshop is coming up next Saturday 5th July. The subject is 'Pricing your work for Sucess' and it is promising to be a winner. With information on the pitfalls of pricing, how to do it with no broken hearts and so that your work flies out the door just the way you want it to, this is not to be missed.

Following in its' wake is 'Proposals' on Tuesday 15th July. Covering how to write sucessfully about your work so that you can get it in front of galleries, funders, curators and other interested parties, this workshop will give you the skills to write about your work as it deserves to be done.

Also starting soon are Peer Critiques, on Wednesday nights from 6 - 8pm. Just quietly, they aren't going to be critical, they are going to be constructive and helpful. So many artists asked me for feedback on their work while I was in the gallery trade, and as an artist I know how hard it is to get good and useful feedback on your work. I have even gone back to school to get it (which is waaaay more expensive than a Trade Secrets workshop!)

For more info about these workshops and the Trade Secrets programme, contact Sian Torrington on 021 1080 540 or lollyducks@gmail.com

...and I'm spent

That's all for this time round, remember just 'cos it's winter doesn't mean you're restricted to mulled wine and toasted marshmallows (although these are winter necessities!). There is plenty on around the streets of Wellington to keep you going.

My current pick for a cheap and cheerful (actually rather hilarious!) night out is the Young and the Witless 2, the improvised soap opera on Wednesday nights at 8pm for the next 5 weeks at Bluenote cnr Cuba and Vivien Sts. Plus it's only $8 bucks to get in...nice!

Ciao for now.
Mark..
